Osteoporosis the

‘Silent’ Condition

Osteopenia and osteoporosis signify varying degrees of bone weakness, with osteopenia representing a milder form of bone density loss, while osteoporosis indicates severe bone fragility. These conditions are often referred to as “silent diseases” because they can progress without noticeable symptoms until a fracture occurs or a diagnostic test reveals the extent of bone density loss. This silent progression underscores the importance of proactive bone health management, as individuals may not realize they are at risk until significant damage has already occurred. Therefore, it’s crucial to prioritize bone health through regular check-ups and lifestyle interventions to prevent the potential consequences of undetected bone weakening.

The difference between DEXA and Echolight R.E.M.S

While both DEXA scans and Echolight serve the purpose of evaluating bone health, they differ in terms of the technology they use and the potential risks involved. DEXA scans utilize radiation and are more commonly used in Alberta for bone density at the minimum age of 50 Alberta if you meet the medical criteria. And often you must wait a 3 year period between tests. Echolight offers a radiation-free alternative which allows anyone over the age of 21 to be assessed. With no radiation you can have tests performed more frequently. This allows for better monitoring and empowers people to take bone health concerns into their own hands.
